There are a lot of fast food options across Orlando, but most of them do not have gluten-free options. With several locations around the area, Portillo’s is sort of a throwback to a diner feel from years ago. After quite a bit of research, I was able to find that they do in fact have some gluten-free options!
Portillo’s shares their nutritional information, including allergen information, on their website. You will NOT get this information from employees or in the store, however. There is nothing marked on their regular menu, but they did confirm some things for me.
First, their fries are gluten-free just like the menu says with their own dedicated fryer. If you are celiac, you must keep in mind that the oil filtration system is shared with the other fryer, so the risk of cross contamination is present.
The hot dogs and hamburgers are gluten-free, provided you leave out the bun. They do not have any gluten-free bread options. On my visit, I opted for the classic beef bowl, with hot and sweet peppers. It’s the same beef they use on their Italian beef sandwiches, but in a bowl.

The steak was shaved and really hot. The peppers were delicious, with a great mix of sweet and heat. There was a lot of oil in the bottom of the bowl, so be careful as you cut the meat and peppers, because it will splash up on you.
The star of the meal is their fries. They were cooked perfect. They were crispy, salty, and perhaps my favorite fries that I have had in a long time.
My family that is not gluten-free had many of the other items which they enjoyed. My son loves the hot dogs. Normally, he hates crinkle cut fries. This time, he ate all his fries and part of mine!
While this is probably not the place for anyone that is celiac, it is a great option for a quick meal if you are gluten sensitive. It was also an affordable option given the usual cost of gluten-free meals.
