Talkin’ Tacos

While driving in Lake Nona recently, I noticed that there was work happening on a new taco restaurant called Talkin’ Tacos. They have several other locations around Central FL (and the country for that matter). Soon after, I saw that the place had opened, so I thought that I would check it out. Especially since I could not find a lot of information available online about the gluten-free options.

The restaurant was busy as I walked in. There were quite a few people sitting around, but I was not able to see much food. After a couple of minutes, one of the staff members handed me a menu. As I scrolled through the menu, I noticed that NOTHING was marked gluten-free. I started to get worried!

You order at a kiosk, so I thought I would wait and see if there was any additional information available a tthe kiosk. Thankfully, the gluten-free options were marked on the kiosk. That was about as exciting as this story gets. There were very few options for gluten-free here. Only two or three taco options were available gluten-free. Most everything else wasn’t available gluten-free (sides, desserts, etc.) After looking for a few minutes, I settled on the Steak al Pastor tacos.

The corn tortillas were ok. Some others in the group shared that their shells felt and tasted greasy. I know that the videos in the restaurant show them placing sauce on the shells while cooking. But there was nothing special.

The steak was just warm, definitely not hot. It was tender, but had zero flavor. I assume that the intention is to let the sauce that is on the taco provide the flavor. It has a avocado salsa on top, and these came with some pineapple as well. The avocado salsa is extremely sweet. It is actually more of a cream sauce than a salsa in my opinion.

Combine that sweetness with the pineapple, and it was just too much. Even with hot sauce that’s availabe on the table (not marked if gluten-free or not), I could not eat the tacos. I ate one, but stopped there. I actually felt like I was going to be sick.

The most disappointing part is that these tacos were $16 for three! I couldn’t even eat two of them and without any sides, I left the store hungry. While the picture may look tasty, I can assure you that I will not go back to Talkin’ Tacos.

The choices are too limited, it seems too risky with unknowns, and the flavor was not that good. You are much better off going to Rocco’s Tacos for gluten-free tacos that you can trust and actually taste good. Plus, you will get sides at Rocco’s so you don’t leave hungry!
